Based on professional wrestling’s first ever no-rope exploding barbed wire time bomb Deathmatch pitting Terry Funk against Atsushi Onita. On first watch, the match was one of the most bizarre and sensational things I had seen in a wrestling ring. I was familiar with Japanese deathmatch antics such as the 1995 King of the Deathmatch tournament final in which Funk took on Cactus Jack – an event I became familiar with at a young age through Foley’s first auto biography, being shocked by the photos from the event printed in the book. I was then drawn to FMW more recently after seeing the company covered in Vice’s Dark Side of the Ring series and this match was something I had to watch. I’m not sure I can quite articulate why I am so drawn to these types of matches but as an illustrator, the spectacle of this match begged to be drawn. You can watch it here.
